Deep Purple Ian Gillan singing Kentucky Woman 1969
Live in Montreux Casino, Switzerland.
Oct 4th 1969
It says Kentucky Woman is the encore. Nah?? Bloody hell, it really IS Kentucky Woman! Close to the original album version, the vocals here are particularly overloaded, and instrumentally Jon is all over his keyboard as everyone else pounds away relentlessly. Ritchie's solo is an especially fine example of guitar strangulation, not quite the bizarrely off-kilter affair of the studio take, but sticking to the spirit. Jon's keyboard solo has, I'm quite sure, been used by him to introduce Lazy on their more recent tours, where it comes from I cannot claim to know, but the musical familiarity doesn't last long as his hands slide ever onward up the keys to give the familiar swell before we're back into the final verse and chorus. Fun, interesting and historically important, the first (and probably last) known take of this song featuring Roger and Ian G.

Kentucky Woman is a great encore.

  • Sorry but my fave Deep Formation is Mark# 1...Rod Evans and Nick Simper..

  • @rgslemer I love Mark 1 they are very melodic and for the late 60's are awesome. I like all incarnations of Deep Purple. Period. Some I like more then others but more then 40 years of DP and bands that came out of it is something.

  • What I posted is an MP3 that I have from some 9 year ego.

There is official release that is much better and cleaner.Sound restoration was carried out to boost frequencies and reduce hiss, but what you get here is near enough exactly what the sound engineer heard back in 1969. This set was discovered in 1999 when Deep Purple's sound archives were moved for safer storage it has remained entirely outside the bootleggers' domain in over thirty years.

  • 3 years before Smole on The water

Kneel & Pray Live in Montreux Casino, Switzerland.

    Oct 4th 1969.

Nobody now recalls why the decision was taken to record this gig. A quarter inch reel was plugged into the mixing desk, and was fed directly from the live sound and mixed on the fly. This is the tape used for this release. No further mixing was possible - and this also explains the fluctuating levels which occur during the opening numbers.

  • @Dimagg1973 Smole on the Water great song, also like Wuntuket wormen!

  • @SuperGlooBand Ops, Smoke on the Water :-)

  • No, definitely not better in any way to Rod Evans version... Fine, it is cool to have an Ian Gillian version, but it doesn't make it better... I stick to Rod Evans version...

  • @Dimagg1973 Not the last version but close. Was played through Oct '69. Then replaced by Lucille & Good Golly Miss Molly as far as encores go....This is the best sound quality though, really like this show !

  • Interesting job from Jon Lord

  • What a kick-ass version !!! Playing at about 200 MPH, the energy that this band produced was always incredible !!! Saw DP for the 1st time in 1973., with opening acts JGeils and Elf, with Ronnie James Dio, who was awesome even then. Thanks for the post !!! Peace:-)

  • Tank you Dimagg1973. O Brazil e o mundo agradecem pelo seu canal
