With the recent issues in the news over bullying, and people complaining about how children today are too coddled and not challenged enough, I present an idea for a show that confronts those issues in a new and unique way.
I call it "A Gang of Daggers."
Basic premise, a group of high school students find a magical portal to another world. On earth, they are at the bottom of the social ladder, the nerds and dorks who get picked on, ignored, pushed around by the adults. On this other world, they are considered adults and can fight, chase girls, and kill people, and get away with it.
Some key things about the show: No fights are choreographed. The actors will learn a form of stage fighting (they will be trained by weapon masters, stuntmen, martial artists, ballet, stage combat, etc) and when filming, if they engage in a fight, the outcome will be unknown. They will have to fight, flee if they are overwhelmed, or die. Blood and dismemberment can be added in afterwards, gruesome death scenes can be edited out for the DVD edit.
Another concept for the show, you will see the actors who are part of the gang join as freshmen, go through training, storylines on both planets, and even the various fights, and in their senior year, they will be in charge, then graduate and leave. The next group of Juniors will become Seniors, have to run things, and then turn over control for the next group. This means there will constantly be storylines on-going, characters who were in the background and come to the fore.
(This concept will likely best play out on DVDs, where a viewer can select a particular character and watch all the scenes involving that character.)
For this show, I just need a high school to participate. And, if I have my way, that high school will receive a lot of money, and the students a lot of support. I want either a high school of the arts, or to create one. Students who are not part of "the show" will likely be in the background as other students, the sports teams, the musicians, etc. For those involved in the show, they will learn the craft of making film and television, both in front of and behind the camera. This will give those students skills they can make use of when they graduate and decide on their careers.
I want to attract people who are fans of, or who hate, things like Harry Potter, The Sopranos, "300," "Friday Night Lights," and even "Glee."
This show will not necessarily be the anti-thesis to any of those shows, but will likely fall into the same age demographic as them, and hopefully be as or more compelling.
You see, to me, I want to see the "magic" in this show to play out the same way you would see technology in a show like "The Twilight Zone" or "The Outer Limits," not technology in "Star Trek: Voyager." The gimmic of the magic is as a means to tell a story, or get a point across. It is not the "made up barrier" that has to be overcome with a "made up thing." This, in my opinion, is what made "Battlestar Galactica" and "Caprica" so interesting and compelling. A story was told with the technology as part of the background or a means of getting the characters and the story to the next beat.
I also want to make a show that actually faces and confronts issues such as violence in schools, gangs, sexuality, suicide, bullying, expression, etc. I want to show people making good and bad decisions, the consequences of those decisions. I want a show that people can watch and learn from.
Will this make the show controversial? Probably. But that sells, right?
I believe this show, if picked up, would have tremendous merchandising potential. Costumes, toys and replicas people can buy, summer camps (where the next years cast can be potentially found and recruited), shirts, posters, etc.
Remember, though, that this will be the show that "goes there" when it comes to discussing and showing what happens in a high school and the challenges that teens today are facing. The irony is it will also show what teenagers faced maybe 2-3000 years ago, too.
