This is a tutorial on how to enable an "Aero" Snap-like functionality in Ubuntu 10.04 (also works in 9.10)- and also how to install 'cowsay' and 'figlet', but that's optional!

THE SCRIPTS:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/1997592/Aero_Snap_With_Compiz_Commands.odt (back these up just in case)

You will need Compiz Config Settings Manager installed in order for this to work. You can install this by navigating to your terminal and typing:

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager
( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6Pcg06wlzI )

1. Download the scripts listed above.
2. Go to your terminal and type "sudo apt-get install wmctrl" (no quotations)
3. Also in your terminal, type "ccsm" to load your settings manager.
3. Click to the 'Commands' button (located in General Settings)
4. Copy and paste the commands from the document into the empty Command Line areas.
5. Bind your commands with either Edge Bindings, or Key Bindings - whichever your preference.
6. Enjoy!

I got some help from these 2 videos, which were very informative.

  • very good intro, are you a professor or a teacher? because you would make a very good one. this way the students would be more intrigued with your lessons.

  • @megamanxu That's an interesting compliment! My parents were teachers, but I'm no teacher. I'm hardly student material! I'm just bored, and sharing it.

  • quick tip..

    ctrl c = copy

    ctrl v = paste

    Save yourself from noobdom!!! ;)

  • @holyzarquon427 I manually copy/paste the first command, just as a visual, then ctrl c/v the others. You're right about one thing though. Noobdom is something that I'll never save myself from :P

  • This is a really great tutorial-- was just wondering is there a way to make it snap only when dragging a window, rather than any time the mouse hits one of the hot spots.

  • Unfortunately I'm not aware of any, which is the biggest reason I use Key Bindings. The Edge Bindings are "Pointer Activated" instead of "Move Activated," which means that simply moving your pointer to the edge causes the command to trigger.

I noticed that you can choose 'Pointer' or 'Move' Edge Binding Activation in the "Desktop Wall" section in ccsm. But for some reason, you don't get that option in "Commands."

The dirty fix would be to change Edge Trigger Delay in "General Options" to 400~

  • dropbox file link is broken... is it just me?

  • @chaide Is there any way to combine two commands? Like mouse button pressed and edge activated? It is not the best, but is cleaner than the other solution(Delay). I Guess.

  • Mine only works for maximizing and restoring the window. I'm using key bindings. Is there any reason this might happen?

  • its enabled by default in 11!

  • First off: I love your sense of humor. It made the video even more fun.

Second: Do you think there'd be a way to devise a workaround with edge bindings? I use edge bindings to rotate the desktop cube, but I would love to be able to do this all from the mouse (because just reaching over to my keyboard wastes those precious seconds :P)

Three: What task bar settings are you using? I somehow forgot how to make it look awesome like that, so I'm stuck with the default ubuntu for now. Any help?

  • How do you make the snap animation effection look like the wobbly matrix mirror?

  • thanks so much for the tutorial this helped me out alot

  • @holyzarquon427 and in linux terminal

    Shift Insert = paste

  • @holyzarquon427 Epic win :)
