High-resolution scanning electron microscope images of possible microscopic fossils, part of an array of indirect evidence found by NASA research, appear to indicate primitive life may have existed on Mars more than 3.6 billion years ago. The fossils were found in an ancient meteorite, designated ALH04001, which is believed to be of Martian origin.

i guess because it's geology or chemical signature doesn't match with earth but does match up with mars quite nicely, if the boot fits...

How can anyone know that this meteorite came from Mars? Did someone watch it being ripped off Mars surface? I guess it's just a classified guess that it came from mars, but based on what? I have never understood this, and I find it rather peculiar.
