Rep. Melancon honored former Louisiana Governor Dave Treen in a speech on the floor of the House of Representatives.
In his speech, Rep. Melancon said, "Whether serving in Congress or as governor, or working as a private citizen, Dave Treen always put Louisiana first. Dave was a bipartisan, middle-of-the-road compromiser who never forgot that there are greater principles worth fighting for beyond party and politics. Dave will be remembered fondly by all of us who knew him as a warm, wonderful person and a committed reformer."
Treen was governor of Louisiana from from 1980-1984 and represented the Third Congressional District in Congress from 1973-1980. An advocate for education, as governor he worked to raise teacher pay and established the Louisiana School for Math, Science and the Arts, a public boarding school for outstanding high school juniors and seniors.
