If I remember, this was the first of Grigorovich's full-length ballets to cememt his fame as a choreographer, and his Katerina the final long role created on Ulanova. Grigorovich produced this wonderful ballet successfully many times during his tenure as artistic director of the Kirov. The other great ballerina role is the classical role of Ukranian Earth Mother and guardian of Earth's natural resources, Mistress of the Copper Mountain. Arrow

I saw this when Ballet Florida first premiered it in France and then last year at the Eissey Theater. It was the best contemporary ballet I have ever seen!
