Just a cylinder with a firey texture set to be transparent, and set reappear at certain points in the timeline.

it looked good except some of the stars flew past over the top of the ship, so theoretically this wouldnt work unless the ship was 100 times bigger than the sun and filmed millions of miles away

Thats what I thought, but this is what it looks like on many trek episodes; stars pass very close to the vessels, I just tried to replicate what I saw on TV.
