Puzzle Quest! - a crazy experiment in university learning.

The challenge was how to still get the students to carry out the various learning activities of the course, despite them not being worth marks.

Richard talks about a teaching experiment conducted at UNSW (The University of New South Wales in Sydney Australia) in the first half of 2011. All the in-course summative assessment was dropped in a large first year computing course, yet students still engaged in all the learning activities which had previously contributed to their final grade.

This work was made possible by the support of Google (with a Google Research Award) Thank you guys! And also the wonderful (and free!) OpenLearning eLearning platform - see openlearning.net

  • THIS IS BRILLIANT. I am totally in awe, my jaw literarly dropped near the end. I want to jump out of my skin from excitement! I'll share this everywhere I go, since it could be revolutionary! I am on my second year of uni, and boy do I know how it feels to have all your expectations let down...Really can't express in words how much Richards lectures and this video mean to me. Will this new course be put up on utube as well? And more importantly- how do I get access to THE GREEN BAR??

  • Feel very lucky to have been in this course

  • Wow, I wish my uni lecturers would adopt this kind of learning strategy. Amazing!

  • This is a perfect example of how the Internet adds value to our lives-sure it is jammed up with crap, porn and mediocrity-but the discerning quester can discover gold -nice to go back to Uni on you tube!

  • Learning is so much fun, only if you have guys like Richard teaching you!
