Improving KDE Performance Part 1 - Kubuntu 10.10

disabling some desktop effects and lowering some crap settings so we can speed up KDE4.5 heoyea

a) Press Alt+F2 and type oxygen-settings. Then go to "animations" tab and uncheck "enable animations". Also under "Window decorations" uncheck "enable animations".

b) System settings}Application appearance}Style}Fine tuning tab. Choose "Low display resolution and low CPU"

c) System settings}Desktop effects}Advanced tab choose fastest texture filter.

deleting nepomuk (doesn't even know what it is :P) freed 130 MB ram

its funny that it says mib at the memory widget because there is no i in megabyte??

@bennyc500949 nepomuk is used for tagging and rating, but yea if u dont use it then it wont matter lols

I'd turn off Use VSync also. At least in games it helps to improve the performance so much.

I Dont even use the Kwin Window Manager. I'm using Compiz and Emerald, because the Effects on Kwin were total unsmoothy,

But the Thing with the oxygen-settings were still good, thanks :)

So where is Part 2 ? ;-)

@Rokalacs Syncing to the VBlanking period has been done successfully in other OS's since like 2001. KDE team needs to get off their ass.

@gotbletu Yes, Strigi does the actual indexing. Nepomuk does handles the searching I think... and tagging. Not sure. But I just turn it all off.

You can turn off Akonadi as well but it gives you some cool features and isn't that resource heavy. But if you're not using Akonadi might as well turn it off.
