Like dewsnupd, I was at the race. I recall Greg LeMond attempting to bridge to the break with a lap or to remaining, and the incredible noise that such a small number of spectators made in reaction to his move.

Yes it was cool to have the pros in Colorado, both for the Worlds and during the Coors International Bicycle Classic a few weeks earlier (Argentin won the Estes Park circuit stage of the CIBC).

Brings back great memories.

What??? Who are you kidding? LeMond was out of the mix that day.

It was Argentin's day, pure and simple. Saronni came in third as I recall. I give Mottet a big applause as he tried to the end in the face of a knowingly better sprinter in Argentin.

Between the chilly weather, wind, hard gradients and elevation the peloton was blown apart. Argentin and Mottet did it better than anyone, WITH an extra 1,000M!

Argentin was a great classic rider, very tactical and clever cyclist, he was a good climber and sprinter, he was even dangerous to Kelly in a sprint.

Yeah, weird place for a championship race. If they had had it near Boulder, there would have been thousands there.

I was standing next to LeMond's dad, about 100 meters from the finish. If the finish line had been another 100 meters up the hill, Greg would have won. He was flying up the hill at the finish. Greg came over to his dad and was just pissed... he said he'd waited too long... just missed his chance. Argentin was great that day.

Former teammate Bob Roll and old pal Norm Alvis really struggled on this course. I had no 'pass,' yet was able to watch it from the 25m to go sign. That wouldn't happen today.

The UCI was a lot more sexist back then; the women's race was only 36 miles. A rather nice surprise was seeing Connie Carpenter (Phinney) in the press pool.

It was great to see Colorado Springs transformed, if only for a month. It was a great opportunity to brush off one's high school French and German. :-)

Anyone know who which French cyclist was riding a flat Clement tire at the end of this race? My club leader brought me a flatted tubular from this race which was taken off a French rider's rim who apparently finished on a slow leak... or at least that was the story!
