Kyma International Sound Symposium (KISS 2010) was performed in Vienna from the 24th-27th of September 2010.
Personally the Symposium was unusual. It appeared unusual to me even in Barcelona during the first Kyma Symposium in September, 2009. Users of Kyma from all of the world gathered together and it became evident (at least for me) that this system is widely utilised by people involved in very different arenas of music and sound.
Due to the attraction that Kyma had with such a diverse range of musical arenas, it managed to unite professionals and enthusiasts that would have most likely never interacted with one another. For example, a professor from Vienna, a DJ from London, a sound designer from Rome, a bass guitarist from a legendary 70s rock group who performed his piece for the balet, an opera singer from Sweden who was involved in the silent movie project with the church organist from Germany, and many others. Clearly, all of these individuals mentioned originate from very different musical fields, but they all use the Kyma system. Though being different, they are all very talented and passionate individuals. In other words, great company. But the main objective was certainly to meet the creators of the Kyma Pacarana system - Carla Scaletti and Kurt Hebel.
Carla -- an unbelievable combination of beauty and intellect. I experience a hypnotic influence when interacting with her. She has a quiet and delicate voice, and an innocent and almost child-like look in her eyes. Kurt Hebel, on the other hand, reminds me of a mysterious character from a fairytale. This pair, these two mathematical geniuses, were the basic element of the Symposium.
When I was invited to perform in Vienna, I initially felt that the biggest honour for me would be to perform a piece connected to Beethoven. I performed the trilogy titled "The Deafness" for Piano, Keyboard, Continuum, Theremin & Kyma." This composition is an aspect of the project - "Live Soundtracks for Movies that don't yet exist.", that was released in collaboration with Michael Vaisburd. The first part of the trilogy, Opus 111, was first performed in Vienna. You can see the second and the third part in Myspace. This video was recorded by Finnish movie director, my friend Maiu Ingman.
