In 1958, Bossa Nova is said to have been born with this song recorded on a single by Joao Gilberto in Rio de Janeiro. The beat was different from anything else that was playing at the time. The rest is history. Here I am recording this piece on You Tube 50 years later. This music knows no time. Hopefully my children will discover this music and play it as well.

Note: Joao Gilberto and bossa nova purists would freak out if they heard this interpretation of this song....i know this. But one does need to make these song theirs. Also, I mis spoke a word. I said "mais" instead of "paz". Someone always catches those so i thought I would beat them to it.

  • well done! what tuning do you have your guitar at?

  • standard. I haven't recorded anything with any other tuning. I know a few Baden Powell tunes which I play with the low E tuned down to D but this particular tune is standard and in the key of Dm modulating at the end to a DM.

  • I like this song but I feel you sing faster than original version. Are you angry at this time? Becouse sound is rougher than you usually play.

  • that's funny you are hearing something I added to my playing lately...i am using a thumb pick. It makes it less smooth but more dynamic which is kind of fun especially if i am playing live at a noisy place. I will continue to experiment with the pick though since i am enjoying it. you don't sound like you like it though.

That had to have been Lani Hall, singer with Sergio Mendes and Brazil '66. Chicago born, later married Herb Alpert. Lovely voice. Wonderful song...Segio had a genius for finding songs that make you feel deeply for a long time, and I'm living proof of that! Try Canto Triste, So Many Stars...

  • By 1961 or 62, Bossa Nova had hit the USA and I became a fan living in NYC. I'm still a fan 50 yrs or so later.

I just heard a beautiful arrangement of a Sergio Mendez classic, "Like a Lover" on the local jazz station. I was in the car parked in front of of the house and I had ice cream melting in the 90 degree weather or I would have listened to the end and the credit.

I don't know who she was, but it was beautiful. Lyrics in English. I would love to hear you sing it. .

  • Love it again! I watch this over and over and always enjoy it!

  • Thank you marcello!!!.Love this jobim tune, i never get tired of hearing it.Beautiful.
