This magnificent performance of Antonin Dvořák's Piano Quintet, Op. 81 was only one piece of a superb programme played by several of the master musicians who spend two weeks each year teaching at the annual International Academy of Music Festival in Tuscany. What makes this performance so remarkable is that these musicians had very limited time to rehearse together -- and only after a full day giving master classes to the students! It was performed in one of the beautiful old churches of Barga, Tuscany in 2005.
This is the first movement -- Allegro, ma non tanto. I will post the other three movements if requested -- the Scherzo is spectacular -- Boris Slutsky plays with such passion.
(In order to squeeze this lengthy first movement into the Youtube 10 minute rule I had to edit out of the first 4 minute repeat. I hope this does not spoil it too much for Dvořák enthusiasts.)

  • wow. awesome. I'm assigned this movement for the chamber summer camp next month (I'm a pianist). The pianist in this group is supposed tol be one of the piano teachers at the camp! so cool :)

  • @NicholasPiano Good luck with your camp, and thanks for commenting on my video.

  • Someone made a comment about partying after teaching and rehearsals. NO partying. Concerts every afternoon and evening.

  • @bakrek1 Were you one of the fortunate few to be there? If so, student or instructor?

  • @bakrek1 Yes I was there. I had the honor of accompanying my sister Linda Rose and her students to the festival. It was a music fest every day. You could hear young people and their teachers rehearsing all over town. A most beautiful place. Castelnuova di Garfanana.

  • @bakrek1 Your sister is very talented.

  • Wonderful, just wonderful. I have seen many videos on the dvorak quintet but this is by far the best. The 1st violinist and the violist are doing a great job. My favorite solo of the 1st violinist is so pure. Thanks for this!!!

  • This is amazing Quintet. The second violin and pianist are doing superb job. Please let me know if there are other videos of these players.

  • One can only wish that they have the opportunity to do more recording--just so satisfying!

  • Rossini wohs

  • @scotjack She has wonderful students.

  • @blp43000 Since these superb musicians only came together for this combined music festival and master class, it is highly unlikely that they will ever play together again.
