We headed to Sweden to compare the performance of summer tyres with winter tyres on snow ­ and the results were quite shocking.

@gotmatt2 Well in winter fuel usage does go up, mainly warming the car up and the snow would cause fuel usage to go up. There are other factor's too like putting a load on the alternator, the more things you turn on in your car ex, blower motor, light's, etc would cause fuel usage to go up. Well it's really put to you what tires you want on your car, for me i don't trust anything else then winter tires for driving on snow.

Ah, so as long as you change the tires with the season you shouldn't notice a difference in fuel usage? I realize that mileage goes down in the winter overall, but I assumed that has as much to do with the additives in the fuel than the friction on the tires. I watched a few vids on the sidebar and it seems that the all seasons fall in the middle but are still way off the snow tires.

@gotmatt2 You get crappy gas mileage in winter driving, for example like walking in snow vs walking on a nice warm day. Takes more energy walking through snow.

@gotmatt2 All I really got to say is when it comes to snow I won't trust anything else then winter tires, they make all the difference. If you can get a really good all-season they might be as good as winter tires but you gotta know what your looking for, not all tires are the same. You get tires that perform well in snow, or get tires that will last longer in warm temp, you can't have both or at least what I've seen.
