COPYRIGHT SOCAN 2010 Johnny Maudlin

Like thousands of others, I became aware of the Second World War exploits of the men of Easy Company when I watched Band Of Brothers. It moved me; I became enthralled with the story. There are many aspects of that history that are worth remembering, worth expressing our gratitude for, but I think the consideration that kept coming back to me was this: it must have been terrifying for such young men to go through that violent experience. They found that had, in the end, only one another. This song is my best effort to honour those men, their time and their legacy...

I Am Major Richard D Winters

1-I am Major Richard D Winters
Won't you sit with me
God has blessed me with a long life
And a soldier's memories
Pretty soon I think I'll take that hill
And join Easy Company
Maybe after all these years I will finally...

2-Be relieved of all this burden
Of my grief for those young boys
They were sent so far from their home towns
Into all that hell and noise
We flew into those German guns
Over Normandy
The sky around our planes was on fire
I can clearly see...

3-The fear on their young faces
But we marched on muddy boots
Commander Meehan was killed in the drop
I was ordered to lead those troops
I led the men through Holland
I led them to Bastogne
We trudged through snow on frozen feet
And we talked of life back home...

BRIDGE

The Germans dug their guns in
Near a little town called Foy
They zeroed in our positions
There was not an American boy
Who did not dig down deeply
Holding on to mother earth
And all through that December midnight
We prayed for all we were worth
Hitler ordered no surrender
They would fight until the death
There was not an American soldier
Who did not hold his breath
They opened up with 88's
Thunder cracked open the sky
I will always remember Lieutenant Lipton
Said it looked like the fourth of July...

4-Sergeant Bill Guarnare and Sargeant Joe Toye
Lost their legs on that bloody snow
The rest of us moved forward
There was nowhere else to go
We crossed the river south of Foy
And pushed on to the Eagle's Nest
The men we lost back there and then
Were our finest they were our best...

5-I am Major Richard D Winters
Won't you sit with me
God has blessed me with a long life
And cursed me with a soldiers memories
I am Major Richard D Winters
Won't you sit with me
I will tell you of a soldier I knew
Who sat his grandchild up on his knee
The child asked him granddad
Were you a hero way back then
No I was not a hero I was not he said
But I served with a company of them...

  • 8 months have passed since the world loss of a hero, a Man like there is no more, and still, this song makes my fly with them.

What great honor in this tribute to the all! Thanks Johnny, hope to play it someday in my guitar :)

  • @McCloudwuss Thanks so much for taking the time to leave that generous comment.

  • Hey Johnny, congratulations on surpassing 2000 visitors to the song. I've returned a few times to get another listen.

  • @joelSanFrancisco Hey, thank you for helping me celebrate that. It's a story that deserves our attention, isn't it? Not the 2000 listens, but the story of those men. I appreciate you taking the time to leave that message ;-)

  • Major Winters is one of the reasons I am even considering serving in the military. He was an amazing man. And this is quite the tribute.

I enjoyed it with tears in my eyes.

    Thank you, sir.

    Currahee, Major Winters.

Rest in peace with those of your brothers that have joined you in heaven.

  • @Monkeykelci All the very best to you whatever you decided and thank you for taking the time to leave such a generous comment. All the best from British Columbia ;-)
