Let me say that I'm glad to pay taxes. My money is used to build public buildings and finance public service. Sharing money is necessary, don't you think?
-
@moesblues coercive and based on aggression? Because it is. Look at the G20, thats the guns of the state coming out. The state, any state is a monopoly on violence over a given area. Take not paying your taxes, or trying to secede, what will happen? Your property will be stolen, you may be put in a cage or you'll have mens with guns trying to harm you. This is statism, is based on barbarism. Voluntary association is not allowed by the state because it would compromise its power.

@moesblues Its simple, lets take America since I assume you live there. I never consented to the constitution, I was arbitrarily born here and "given" (how kind of the state) "citizenship". I didnt consent to the laws, enter into any governmental contract ect and to assume that the constitution has perpetual binding authority to future generations is slavery. And I know the KKK doesnt govern, but the same principle applies in changing the system , group ect. And why do I think that the system is

@InTheEndIWasRight As to the fire fighters. I couldn't agree more that 3/4's of fire fighters in the US are volunteer. That said, if you look a little closer, many of those volunteer departments are funded at least partly by grants from the state and federal governments. Those grants are funded by taxes. My reason for pointing out the volunteer fire departments of New York City in the 19th century was to illustrate an example as to how taxpayer funding of the Dept.'s came into being.

@InTheEndIWasRight There's not nearly enough space here to address your assertion that the "social contract" is a myth. That said, the topic is debatable. The KKK analogy is simply bizarre as they're not in the business of governing. I am genuinely curious as to your specific idea of the system being inherently coercive and based on aggression. I'd be interested in here a detailed description as to why you think this is so.

@TheTruePooka: The Diamond Age takes place in the same world\timeline, but takes place when YT is an old lady. YT is the only character from Snow Crash that makes an appearance, but Stephenson does make a few references indicating that it's the same world.
I would love for him to write a Snow Crash sequel with all the same characters. That would rule.

@D4Shawn Did he ever write a continuation of the book in some form? It's an awesome world he created.
-
@TheTruePooka: He's my favorite author, so I couldn't let that one stand.

The reason your opinion sounds vaguely reasonable, is because you seem to be addressing an individual or small minority. However, If people were given the opportunity to opt out of paying taxes, I guarantee that a lot more people than you suspect would do so, and the government would be forced to significantly reduce it's power and scope. As a result, many of the services currently provided by the public sector would instead be provided by the private sector. They wouldn't simply disappear.

@D4Shawn Thanks for the correction. Next time I'll actually look at the bookshelf before typing in a name. :P

@TheTruePooka: Neal Stephenson wrote Snow Crash. Simmons is the bassist for Kiss.

(cont) approaches to solving social problems. And as for fire fighters, almost 3/4's of fire fighters in the US are volunteer. So this notion of volunteer services not working that are critical like fire departments is just wrong.

The "social contract" is a myth. But "why not use the system to change it?" If I find the system to be inherently coercive and based on aggression why would I use it if it would force other people to comply to my preferences? For example, I dont like the KKK, Im not going to join the KKK or try and work with them to get them to change their minds. Same goes for statism. A viable solution is secession and to allow people to voluntarily associate with whom they like and can try their own
-
@TheTruePooka I haven't read "Snow Crash," but now that you mention it I will look into it. It sound like something roughly along the lines of Philip K. Dick whose stuff I happen to like.
-
Have you ever read Simmon's "Snow Crash"? It's similar to Gibson's "Cyberpunk". The world consists of an America that is made up entirely of privatized companies and each franchise is entirely autonomous. You buy membership - if you can afford it. Outside of those franchises the country is governed by private armies.
I'm not saying it's a terrible way to live, but I'd think twice before wanting to live in such a world.
Solid explanation man.

Great video.
If you decentralize power, then those who prefer collectivized monopolies can form communities/societies incorporating such things, and likewise, people who prefer competing agencies can do the same. It doesn't have to be one or the other. It is quite possible for human beings to actualize far more diversity and variety in the way of social organization. It is only the centralization of power that prevents this.
D4Shawn 1 year ago
@D4Shawn Yet, you must admit that there must be some form of centralization with regards to the necessities needed for a stable society. Here I'm thinking of what might happen should there be a clash between the collectivized monopolies/societies and those who prefer competing agencies. Also, what do you think the result would be if a more centrally organized external force threatened the livelihood of such a decentralized society?

oh fucking hell...
a prisoner who uses the services available to him in a prison is not automatically in favour of the prison.
if the government ALLOWED for more private roads, if the government ALLOWED for localised voluntarily paid for fire departments (by the way, statistically most firefighters in american are volunteers so you fail in that regard) then wed use them!
plus, even heard of private schools? DUH.
jesus christ...
Ilikenuman 1 year ago
@Ilikenuman 1st off, many of those American volunteer fire departments are funded partly by state and federal grants which come from taxpayers (i.e. not exactly a fail). 2nd, where exactly in my video did I mention being "in favor" of government? The premise of the video wasn't to log my support of the government, but instead to address the notion that taxes ≠ theft and that apathy as an answer to bad government only makes bad government worse. Finally, christ's got fuck all to do with anything!

Thats if I understood this right. Honestly your criticisms are generic and basic to anyone new to the topic so yea Im just not into it much since I've heard this like a million times thats all.
InTheEndIWasRight 1 year ago
@InTheEndIWasRight Honestly, you're right about my criticisms being generic and basic, but so is the simple statement that taxes = theft. My reason for making this vid was after hearing Sarahon06 boldly make that simple statement without giving any sufficient evidence to back it up. Simple statement=simple response. That said, I'm curious as to the details of your position. I don't have the time to look through all 510 vids on your channel. PM me with some suggestions so I can get a better idea.
