To reflect in my own life, I have one friend who is male and straight. I'm male and mostly gay. But our friendship feels like more than a normal friendship. We sleep together and cuddle, have kissed three times or so, but there's never been a sexual thing. It's best described as a "romantic friendship," and has been going on for nine years. I think Utena's gift is that every relationship shows a different flavor of love. Love only has to be defined, fall into certain boxes, if we think it does.

That's fairly questionable. If Utena was just a boy, people would of course say it was het, confirmed with the line, "The only time I've ever been happy, was when I was with you." Only when things are same-sex orientated do people want 100% proof (do to our assuming of heterosexuality). Though, in this anime, it can be said there is little question that they, at the end, are in love. Whether or not it's platonic is sort of unknown, which is fine.

Utena and Anthy's relationship clasifies as shoujo-ai. I think that there would be more loving and caring in their relationship than the sexual activity. I believe that at first Utena was in love with Akios, her 'prince'/ But when it all came down to it, she was the prince and she wanted to protect her princess. She fell in love with Anthy at the end, yet I have a feeling that Anthy had love Utena earlier.
Personally I love the anime. I would watch a remake, only if it gave this show justice.

@Aicirt8 Maybe they were talking about the movie?

I just can't watch this as yuri. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy yuri animes plenty, but the show (aside from the film) just feels like a beautiful friendship to me. I believe that Utena does want a normal boy, and she only loves and protects princesses from a good hearted stance, not from a sexual one.

to me it doesn't matter if male or female. i think the point is that at the beginning she is searching for her prince, but then she realize that she doesn't need it. but here utena make a mistake, she thinks she need to become Anthy's prince, and she try to protect and save her, but she fails at the end. that's because neither Anthy needs a prince to be saved, and whenshe realize it she leave the school on her own will, leaving Akio in his immature dream.

SPOILERS:
I was talking to a friend the other day and they said that originally Utena believed that she could become a prince only by becoming a male. I disagree. I don't think Utena ever wanted to become a guy.
A few times throughout the series she mentions that she'd like a normal boyfriend, and she also keeps her hair long. I don't think wearing the boy's uniform means she wants to become a boy. What do you guys think?

I will love it if they renovate it and make a better ending of the anime but they should keep this and the opening song. but overall is one of the best anime I have seen.

I love Utena and all but I never understood this song. It sounds all poetic but it never made ANY sense.

Utena was the best anime ever!
I wish there were more episodes, but I hope they don't remake it and ruin it with modern anime bull.-.-'''
I think this might be the only anime I truly wanted to rewatch...over and over...
