Professor De Jesus of Hunter College School of Social Work argues at the CUNY Board of Trustees meeting on November 15th, 2010 that the proposed 5% plus $1000 per year tuition increases should go back to students in the form of scholarships.

First, no where in the proposal does it actually designate money from the tuition increases for scholarships or even for the Hunter College School of Social Work itself. The language states it "MAY" go to certain departments. Shouldn't our professor, then, be objecting to the proposal as it stands in favor of one that includes language about student scholarships?

Secondly, why take money away from students already going into debt in order to create a few scholarships? Scholarship money should be raised from those who have the money to give, not students who would need to take out bigger loans to fund them.

Lastly, increasing tuition across the board makes CUNY less accessible overall for potential students who would qualify for scholarships. Increasing tuition means admitting more wealthier students and having only a select few low-income students on scholarships.

For an educational system that was FREE up until the 1970's, the CUNY tuition increases just don't make sense. YOU CAN HELP! Contact your local NYC representatives and say NO TO CUNY TUITION INCREASES!
