HDR sunset timelapse

Here is a sunset that took place in Paris, mid-September 2008.
At the beginning, a kind of mini rainbow can be observed in center-left (pretty seldom phenomenon I saw few times, due to ice/water in suspension?)
By the end, some stars can also be seen (some lights downside disturb a bit...)
As usual, lots of contrails / chemtrails are visible (Roissy Charles de Gaulle airport traffic and other standard airways).
Creation: 6567 pictures (3 exposures) merged into 2189 ones - initial lasting time: 2h45.

Voici un coucher de soleil s'étant tenu à Paris, mi-septembre 2008.
Au début, une sorte d'arc-en-ciel réduit peut être observé au centre-gauche (phénomène plutôt rare déjà parfois aperçu, dû à la présence de glace/eau en suspension ?)
Vers la fin, des étoiles soit également visibles (les éclairages du bas de l'image en gênent un peu la visibilité...)
Comme à l'accoutumée, de nombreux contrails (traînées de condensation) / chemtrails (traînées de produits chimiques) sont visibles (trafic de l'aéroport Roissy Charles de Gaulle ou autres routes aériennes standards).
Création: 6567 photos (3 expositions) fusionnées en 2189 - durée initiale : 2h45.

But the scene makes it all, technology just highlights it.

I have a Canon A650 and wanted to do time lapse, but I guess you have to have an automatic shutter. Is that right?

I'm a computer programmer and would love to find a way to control the camera through software. Perhaps there is a standard published somewhere.
