Im a little confused, the gas comes off the wood on the top right? but then the gas gets pulled down through the fire, how does it no light and burn? im used to the two separate chambered gas generators were one has a fire and the other is an air tight container with wood in it for the gas, how does yours work?

@NathansBackwoods This design is a downdraft stratified unit. There are distinct "zones" in the consumption of the wood. I let the wood get really low in the tube so you could see the "flaming" zone. Under that as soon as the oxygen is consumed is the zone of "reduction" which is what would be the separate chamber in other systems. The wood just keeps reducing till it drops out of the hearth as little bits of char. The gas is pulled out of the bottom as well, then cooled, filtered, used.

@alligatorsoupisgood, ok that makes more sense, so the gas doesnt burn because there is no oxygen for it when it pulls trough the fire because the fire consumes the oxygen.

The unit is under vacuum from an old kirby vacuum cleaner. The kirby is speed controlled by a dimmer switch, like for a light. This type of burn is called "downdraft", which just means there is a vacuum pulling the air down through the different burn zones.
