Autism Society of the Philippines presents Angels Walk for Autism

The Autism Consciousness Week finally kicked off last January 18, 2009 with the annual Angels Walk for Autism held at SM Mall of Asia. The theme for this year is Sharing Hopes, Building Dreams.

As early as 6am, people started to take all roads that lead to the Philippines 2nd largest mall participate in this walk for a cause that calls to provide understanding and opportunities for people with autism.

The event was also attended by well-known personalities such as singer and actress, Karylle; SM Prime Holdings President, Hans Sy; SM Shopping Center Management Corporation President, Annie Garcia; Assistant President, Steven Tan and Vice President for Operations, Bien Mateo; Commission on Human Rights Chairperson, Leila de Lima; National Council on Disability Affairs Executive Director, Geraldine Ruiz and Buhay Partylist Representative, William Tieng.

Other Persons with Disabilities (PWD) Sector also made their present felt and supported this activity by Autism Society Philippines (ASP) like Lauro Purcil, Abner Manlapaz, Kamay at Boses Pilipinas President, Engel Gamboa and the SM Committee on Disability Affairs led by Engr. Mateo.

The program started with a warm-up exercise provided by Fitness First where the audience, including the special children, exercised to the tune of music.

Autism Diva, Thara Marie Santiago, sang the national anthem with Karylle acting as the conductor. Special messages were done by Sy, Tieng, Garcia, de Lima and ASP President, Erlinda Koe.

The walk followed afterwards around the mall complex. An estimated 4,000 people attended the event, thus surpassing the last years total of 3,500.

A talent show and concert by special children were held after the walk in which they amazed the crowd with their talents in singing and dancing.
