Part of what made this show so great was Lynne Thigpen's stoic yet tongue-in-cheek delivery. For being a tough character, she always let you catch a glimpse of her free-wheeling ways. I also love groan-inducing corny dialogue, which the show's writers never failed to thrust upon the viewers. The chief doing a Marlon Brando impression after she refers to a Streetcar Named Desire as being "stellar" is a classic example.
