Japanese Christian Chorus Brings Hebrew Music back to S.A. in May
"When 40 women and men of the Japanese Shinonome Chorus Christian Friends of Israel from Kyoto, Japan begin to sing, audiences catch their breath. It is the captivating beauty of their singing, unexpectedly in Hebrew. They sing songs of the land and people of Israel, liturgical texts and of Biblical themes. At their core, the ensemble has a passionate belief in a strong and vibrant State of Israel" according to Hazzan David Silverstein of Congregation Israel.
San Antonians of all faiths and cultures will have an opportunity to hear this group known as the Makhelat Hashachar on Thursday, May 19 at 7:30 p.m. in the Wulfe Sanctuary of Temple Beth El.
The chorus is part of Kyoto's Beit Shalom, a cultural center founded and dedicated to the promotion and support of the State of Israel It is their third visit to the Alamo City, and their first at Temple Beth El.
"It is because of Hazzan's Silverstein's 25 year friendship and past work with the chorus that we are able to present this extraordinary ecumenical experience." said Sharon Davison, event co-chair.
The entire community is invited to the concert without charge, though donations of $18.00 will be accepted to help the chorus contribute to Japanese Disaster Relief and offset its expenses while on tour.
