  • Hi- This sounds like a variation on the 'and' technique you sent me a while ago. That was fantastic. So I thought I'd try this.

It is alway a battle to get my eight year old to clean up his room, so I couldn't wait to try this. So I did, just before his bedtime story. There was a little friction, but I stayed calm, stood my ground, and the toys are put away now. He even got to bed on time, with his story. You know, I think he was happy that I won. Can you explain that?

    Thanks-

    Sharon

  • Hi Sharon-

What many parents don't understand is that our children really need us to be in control and be in charge. The world is a very scary place for a child. There is a lot that can happen the he can't control. Your child wants the security in knowing that there is someone who cares about him that he can rely upon to look out for his best interests. For that reason, our children including our teens want us to be strong in charge and in control- no matter how much of a fight they give us.

  • Thanks so much Dr. Kane...I have used this technique successfully with my mentally challenged high school students...I think this is the best nugget I've gleaned from all your tips so far...and I'm passing your tips on to my students' parents.

  • Great video. I can't wait to try this with my teenager.

    Thanks.

PS You need to shave. You look like Osma bin Laden

  • Hey Dr. Kane-

I just did this with my 8 year old and it works! Thanks.

  • Hi Dr. Kane-

This is Holly. These videos are fantastic. I am having such troubles with my 13 year old daughter. I always feel like such a washed out rag after fighting with her. Yesterday's video changed. I can't wait to try this one. Tonight it's my daughter's turn to clear the table, which usually ends up in a, "but I need to do ___ " battle. I going to try this out tonight. Wish me luck.

    -Holly

    PS Keep the videos coming.
