This video is not really showing properly how to train the dog on touch board: normally, I have a treat in a cup about 3 metersin front of the dog walk. As the dog proceeds on a dog walk, it is focusing on the cup of treat. When the contact is being commenced (beep), I release the dog to take the reward. Soon, the treat is being replaced with a following jump. An obstacle works as a reward as well as a treat. After a few dozen repeats, touch board could be removed.
Cool. :) When I'm training the contacts I put a target plate at the bottom, with a treat on it to begin with, so the dog's nose goes down, he focuses forward, and he learns the position I want him to be in. Slowly the treat is faded from the target plate, and then the target plate is faded all together. But that could be considered luring, and you might want to do all shaping? :)
Initially the criteria was not clearly set and the dog was not really aware of which behavior brings a reward. I really should not have let the dog return on the board after a missed touch -this was not the right behavior for committing a proper contact.
However, he´s getting better in the end as he is being released from the board with a "okay" cue and rewarded with a following jump and occasionally with a treat..
I don't see that this trainer is giving the dog information on exactly what behavior is desired? It seems they keep doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results...?
