What Chrysler did wrong was to appeal to too many market segments with their Dodge brand, which is apparent in this commercial. It tries to target the young, athletic consumers (surfers, people at a concert), serious truck buyers (construction crew), and consumers looking for fuel efficiency (short reference to a Dodge speeding by a gas station with no need to stop). The problem with this is that these segments are very different and Dodge tried to do too much.
