Composed by Mykola Leontovych (1877-1921) in 1916
Ukrainian Chamber Choir "Cantus"
Choirmaster: Emil Sokach

Hark! how the bells
Sweet silver bells
All seem to say,
"Throw cares away."
Christmas is here
Bringing good cheer
To young and old
Meek and the bold
Ding, dong, ding, dong
That is their song
With joyful ring
All caroling
One seems to hear
Words of good cheer
From ev'rywhere
Filling the air
Oh how they pound,
Raising the sound,
O'er hill and dale,
Telling their tale,
Gaily they ring
While people sing
Songs of good cheer
Christmas is here
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas
On, on they send
On without end
Their joyful tone
To ev'ry home
Ding, dong, ding, dong.

  • No wonder it sounds a bit funny in English, its not meant to be sung in it!

    Absolutely amazing in Ukranian!

  • This is my first time hearing it in it's native tongue. It sounds sooooo much better!

  • best version.

  • Lovely song. The last bars are very charming.

  • This song is amazing in it's original language. The Ukranian language is beautiful!

  • Beautifull in english, but even better in ukranian!

  • @AndyHirt The original words can be found at Wikipedia: Shchedryk_(song)

    check under 'Comparison of Lyrics'.

  • @AndyHirt Indeed, it is celebrated on January 7th. Unlike Western celebrations, it is Christmas Eve that is the big night of feasting!

  • @NoMoreVanilla Well not being a "professional", but still singing for a living (ha), I wouldn't get too picky about where to sing an acapella song.. you know, like it's somewhere around Booooooong.

O the other hand, I've found that the low male voices capability to deliver a staedy, low but stillfull support, almost as if they were humming (with foundation) greatly enhanses this song.

Always loved it! Now I know it's Ukrainian!

  • @iamallamazement2 - its trully an amazing song in Ukrainian...even better when you actually understand it...lol

I remember being a little kid in Ukrainian school on the weekends singing this song around christmas...didn't appreciate the experience as much as I do now.
