This is one of Bowie's songs that I really love. It has got a true meaning. He sings it with his own, special and unique way. I think he has the most beautiful blue eyes, he is very talented and a legendary glam rock singer. Really glad to had the chance to hear to his work and feel all the feelings that he want to pass to his fans. I love his persona Ziggy Stardust. Some people like him, some others not. The reason is one: If you decide to listen Bowie's songs you have to be able to find the hidden, true meaning of the lyrics and then take a trip to his world. It is a strange world but that's the thing that makes David being special and unique. David I am a true fan, thanks for giving me a chance to dream...

  • Even though I love David Bowie, this just can't be compared to Jacques Brel.

  • I first knew Bowie's version, which I have always loved, and of course Jacques Brels original is magnificent. It is not fair to say that Bowie murdered the song, he just gives it a different interpretation. Besides this, some of Bowie's live covers of Brels "My Death" are true masterpieces.

  • though there's an original exists, he owns what he tries to sing..

  • Jacques Brel's version is in french and I dont know french,so, I like more this version... I don't understand why is so bad that he made a cover

  • Share the love, not the hate ppl

  • @meineusername Well, my comment was meant to be ironic :D I just love to see when people patronize other people and try to raise above them ;)

  • @meineusername a tad snarky, are you? i was responding to someone who thought bpwie's version was better than brel's. i love bowie's interpretation. jacques brel's is perfection. i love both screamin' jay hawkins' and marilyn manson's versions of "i put a spell on you" equally. the artist who originally writes a song is judged for conceiving the song itself. the artist who does a cover of the song is judged for his/her interpretation of the original. lol.

  • @mmedeuxchevaux "it doesn't diminish the original"? LOL! The very idea of anyone - let alone Bowie - diminishing Jacques Brel. You're hilarious. Brel was unique. Nobody can copy him, improve on him or diminish him. He stands alone.

  • @aiccu You're welcome. As you can see, a "pale imitation" is an expression and it does not mean the same as straightforwardly "imitating" someone. Hence a "Pale imitation of Brel" does not mean that Bowie imitated Brel. Or tried to.

  • @nuid1 Thanks, I always love people who read a lot and know what they are talking about ;)

  • Actually I would say that it isn't a bad version, but I'im sure about one thing, the original version singed by Jacques Brel sounds better, He was a real poet, and showed it by singing to.

  • @aiccu Pale Imitation: Definition:

something that is similar to but not as good as something else

'Modern luxury ships are a pale imitation of the glamour and style of the early ocean liners'

(Definition of pale imitation noun from the Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary & Thesaurus © Cambridge University Press)
