@georgethebrownerful This issue affected all regions, as all the switching from GMTV/ITV1 and the regional news studios is done centrally. Anglia was allowed to run over to recap the lead story as it was important information for those about to travel out.

These opt-out mistakes affect all the regions, not just Anglia, as the problem is with GMTV's regional switching system. In this case, where it cut late to Anglia they missed out on the football travel information, so Anglia was allowed to stay on to repeat it when the other regions handed back to GMTV.

what was that black and white thing at the top right corner

It's the cue dot, used by ITV on live programming to signal to the tranmission centres when to go to ads, or in this case by GMTV to signal to the regional studios when to start. It disappears 5 seconds before the change.

Actually, GMTV opt times are counted to by the gallery PA, and actual opts are a known duration. So Anglia started their broadcast on time, but the regional centre didn't opt from network. the on-air apology so quickly suggests it was a local problem, not GMTVs.

The switching of the regions is done in London however by GMTV, the regional studios have no control over the switching to them, they just provide a feed of the news programming to London (or in the case of the northern regions, Leeds), and then it's up to either GMTV or ITV1 Southern Transmission Centre to switch to the regions depending on which is on air.
