For 23 years we had planted, very carefully, the lakefront acreage of our forest, keeping it natural looking. The finest hardy rhododendrons were spotted strategically in the forest. (The conditions are so ideal, many are seeding naturally.) Sadly, and frankly a bit devastating to me psychologically, this area was to open to the public as the beginnings of a park/arboretum in conjunction with the nursery, just a few weeks after the storm hit July 21st, 2010. 95% of the huge old oaks and pines were destroyed in this area by tornado like winds and microbursts. The clean up has begun. We are not giving up...persistence does pay off but its a giant setback to the park plans. The view of the lake will be much better... a small silver lining.
WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT...SEE OUR WEBSITE AT www.easternplant.com or write us at BOX 660A BERRYS MILL RD, WEST BATH, MAINE, 04530 We still need more volunteers to help clean up-firewood or plants in trade. Many people have donated to the clean up fund..thanks to all who have. Mark Stavish, Eastern Plant. Our mail order business continues and visitors are still welcome to our lakefront nursery as we re-build.
