Oh, thats just the normal sound of the hard drive's arm moving on and off the disk. That happens often to my white MacBook.

Applecare will replace the HardDisk controller FOR FREE, fixing the clicking noise, EVEN IF OUT OF WARRANTY!!

that should only happen on sleep and shutdown. but seeing as how chinese children make everything in that computer, its probably just shitty.

that's just the sound of the hard drive switching off to save power. It happens when there's been a while since it has been used. If you don't like it, simply go to system preferences->energy saver, and uncheck the option "put hard drives to sleep when possible". If you don't trust my word, simply get a usb external hd, and listen to the sound it makes when you unplug it.

Mine's been making this noise for about three years now. It seems to affect performance but only while making the noise. Only seems to happen after it's been running for a few hours though.
justinderoin15 and mrivera, hard drives do not make a loud thudding noise. The sound is the read arm bashing against the rest stops as it fails to land. If your hard drive makes this noise, it will die.
Clearly all drives make noises, however none make cyclic, very loud, metallic contact noises.
