A show that details many aspects of the video game industry. Episode 022 is a tutorial on how to fix a poor video quality on a Sega Game Gear caused by bad capacitors. It does take soldering skills so be warned. Here's a PDF so you can print out the instructions: http://www.mediafire.com/?dudx5fzdgny

Disclaimer: By performing this repair you risk accidentally damaging your Sega Game Gear. I am not responsible for any damage you may inadvertently cause to your system. I do not guarantee that this repair will fix your console as there may be many causes of video failure. Soldering electronics is always a risky enterprise; if you dont have much experience doing it have a friend do it for you. Soldering irons are very hot and should be handled with extreme care. By continuing to watch this tutorial, you agree to do this repair at your own risk.

For this maintenance job, you will need:

1. Towl or Sheet so you dont scratch the Game Gears screen
1. Security Screwdriver
1.Philips Screwdriver
1. Bowl to collect loose screws
1. Pair of Pliers
1. Several (Microfarad) capacitors. I buy from www.mouser.com
A soldering iron & lead free solder with flux
Rubber gloves

  • i looked on mouser and saw a organic aluminam polymer 6.3 v 33 uf capacitor, would that work?

  • @MrVGXD I can't say for sure I've only used electrolytic capacitors. But just so you know, you can get any 33uf capacitor so long as it's above 6.3 volts. So long as the uF is the same you can get any capacitor equal to or greater than the voltage you are replacing. For example: if you can replace a 33uF 6.3c cap with a 3uF 10v cap.

  • Hey man, I'm a little confused about something. Maplin is the store I can get capacitors, however I do not see 6.3v only 63v,, do they mean 6.3 or 63? and Could I just buy all with 63v and be fine?

    Cheers

  • @badstrref Here's the skinny on capacitors voltage. So long as the uF is the same you can get any capacitor equal to or greater than the voltage you are replacing. For example: if you can replace a 100uF 6.3c cap with a 100uF 10v cap.

    Good luck!

  • @kainkusanagi

That's what I thought, so I have ordered a bunch of the same uF (4.7s, 10s, 100s etc) for each necessary capacitor on the game gear, but they are all 50v versions (this was the easiest to find and cheapest). That'll be fine right bud?

  • @badstrref Yep, you're good to go.

  • @kainkusanagi Thanks ill have to go sometime because my screen has gone out like you explain. Very good video, I am Also a Collector.

  • @Greenjeansmntdew Most hardware stores should have it. Just take your Game Gear with you to size it up so you don't by the wrong size.
