My favorite of Copland's compositions!

This piece was composed for the documentary film "The City" which was made for the NYC World's Fair of 1939.
For info on the film, see the Wikipedia entry at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_City_(film) (if it brings up a list, click on the option for The City (film)

Copland's piece truly captures the point of the film, that suburban sprawl could be controlled and maintained in the form of small, utopian-like communities that contained everything people would need.

Ah well, just added this piece because I just love the peaceful piece for English Horn, Trumpet & Strings.

Performing is the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

Enjoy!

  • this is kind of fast for this piece...beautiful though.

  • Thank you for posting this beautiful work. I am preparing this as the final piece on my graduate trumpet recital. Thank you also for providing some of the background information and classic photos of this iconic American Composer.

**However, as the topic of my thesis, this piece was in fact written for Irwin Shaw's Theater Stage production "Quiet City". Copland was approached by Harold Clurman to complete this work for the Group Theatre in NYC. Sadly, it survived only 2 performances on stage!

  • @ITZitzibitz Kunzel does nice work with jazz works like this and the ones he recorded by dave brubeck

  • I just heard this on WCLV radio ... needed more. Beautiful...

  • This is an incredible piece of music for film. Thanks so much for posting this...VERY inspiring.

  • This is my single favorite piece of music ever. That's always a precious thing - something that you've heard for years and years and has never dropped in your estimation.

Although, this seems a bit fast... only very slightly

  • I've loved this piece for years. I didn't know that it was written for a documentary. Strangely, it appears to me to have more in common with Hopper's paintings - empty cityscapes - isolation in crowded environments.

  • This is stunningly beautiful.

  • Worked twelve hours today , and hated allot of the experience. Struggling with the stratagem of the underachiever, and the slime necessarily worn waking from chore upon chore. By this math-honor is kept, and This makes me feel as though, not only my life-any life, is worthy &at least opportunity is to give such beautiful reflections; offered as not mine, yet for me, and for you, yet not yours- is as the bounce of horn, and of light as the time and hope blend unto merciful end.
