Surgeons at Johns Hopkins Hospital have successfully completed their 100th kidney paired donation — a procedure popularized by the Baltimore medical center which has enlarged the pool of kidneys available for donation and allowed patients who might have died before getting new organs to receive them.
Many times, a loved one is willing to donate a kidney, only it turns out that the pairs blood or tissue is incompatible. In kidney paired donation (KPD), doctors find other pairs in the same predicament. By exchanging kidneys between pairs, each pair involved gets a compatible — and life-saving —kidney.
This video highlights Wendy and Jeffery Crowder who participated in the Incompatible Kidney Transplant Program.
I was diagnosed with PKD 30 years ago and fortunately it has progressed slowly. I just learned this week that things have worsened and I might be facing dialysis in 2-3 years. It was a shock - I feel healthy. This video is the brightest story I've seen so far. I live in NOVA and have a new doctor at Georgetown. I dread the thought of dialysis so I will be checking in with Dr. Montgomery when the time comes. He is the type of doctor we all want. Thanks for publishing this encouraging story.
