Like everyone in the 50s, GM's designers were taken with the jet age. These cars wowed the crowds at special auto shows called Motoramas that GM used to build excitement about their more plebian retail offerings.

Eventually the cars were put under wraps and hidden away in corporate garages to gather dust. But fans of the cars couldn't stand the thought of these beauties being hidden away so they rescued them, dusted them off and they've been restored. All of the Firebirds were reunited this summer and shown at the annual Pebble Beach Concours d'elegance.

  • My sons get a big kick out of telling me "Yeah dad, when you were a kid you thought by now you'd be getting around in a flyin' car and everyone would be wearing shiny silver jumpsuits." They are right, and I am so disappointed. A Prius just don't cut it.

  • Ah, the glories of 1950's visions of the future!

  • lol firebird wheres burt reynolds?

  • its a shame gm doesnt do stuff like this anymore since they were bailed out by the government nowadays they have to be careful

  • Ahhh, back in the day when there was unlimited supplies of fuel. I can imagine the Firebirds using the same amount of fuel driving to the supermarket as a A380 uses between London and New York!!

  • Turbine powered vehicles did eventually go into production...as the M1 Abrams tank, which is powered by a turboshaft engine. It was built by Chrysler, though, not GM.

  • i say "bring those rockets back". i want one.

  • The big fin on the back is funny, but no funnier than aftermarket do nothing spoilers I see on rice rockets.
