Despite the lack of amazing countetenors back then, the obvious beauty of his upper resgister and his star quality and charm, I wonder how people could really put up with his sudden (and awful) register changes and his obvious terrible mistakes. It must be said that, mistakes or not, he is very musical and never off pitch. I bet the players were all feeling rathe akward. I would have.
