Thomas Bangalter y Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo se conocieron en la secundaria en París, Francia. Tenian 13 y 14 años cuando coincidieron en una clase. Apasionados por el cine y la música, admiradores de Jimi Hendrix, de los artistas de Motown y de los Beach Boys.
Con 17 años crean Darlin. Cabe mencionar que Darlin es una canción de los Beach Boys incluida en el álbum Wild Honey (1967). Además en este grupo estaba también Laurent Brancowitzm (originalmente se llama Laurent Mazzalai pero bueno..) quien es guitarrista de Phoenix (otro dato curioso es que el hermano de Laurent Brancowitzm, Christian Mazzalai, también forma parte de Phoenix)
hicieron el grupo de 3 compañeros de clase y editaron un single en el sello Duophonic, de Stereolab, con 1500 copias.

pero no tuvieron exito, y la revista inglesa Melody Maker les puso el apodo de un puñado de tonto punk.(en gringo daft punk) aqui es donde darlin se desintrega y cada quien se va para su destino... lo demas es historia
