Before We Turn to Stone (Arthur/Gwen)

SPOILERS THROUGH 3x10

Oh, God. Wow. This episode...wow. It killed me so many times. I watched it four times yesterday and I cried EVERY. SINGLE. TIME Arthur kissed Gwen and yelled that he would always love her. I'M A ROMANTIC SAP, OKAY?

And I know, I know: I have about a billion projects I should be working on. But I've had this song stuck in my head for a while, and after this episode aired I realized I just HAD to vid to it. I have to be honest, I haven't felt this inspired in a VERY long time.

This vid is...slightly AU. Depending what you take away from it. I definitely didn't start this vid intending it to be angsty, but it seems angst is all that's on my mind at the moment. This vid examines Arthur and Gwen's (but mostly Arthur's) reaction to Gwen's death sentence. The vid goes back and forth between the tragedy and the moments that lead up to it as well as memories of plans they had made for the future (so yes, for the purposes of this vid some scenes -- such as Arthur and Gwen's discussion about him giving up the throne -- occurred before their appearance in the episode). I imagined that during this time Arthur felt guilty for pushing the relationship when Gwen had said many times before that she didn't think it was wise (even though she definitely started "courting" him on her own accord). That said, this vid also attempts to show how there really was no better path to take: in the end they seized the day (carpe diem) and didn't allow their fears to prevent them from finding true love and -- however fleeting it might've been -- happiness. Note: this vid takes place in the time leading up to Gwen's execution. Whether she actually dies or not is up to the viewer.

Voice overs:


Gwen: Perhaps when you become a farmer we can be together more often.
Arthur: It's just a dream.

Uther: She has been found guilty of using magic and enchantments. She will be burnt at the stake.
Arthur: No!
Uther: Restrain him!
Arthur: You can't do this!

Arthur: I'll be careful.
Gwen: For me.

Arthur: We will leave Camelot -- never return! J-ju-just let us go! I relinquish my entitlement to the throne!

Gwen: Perhaps when you are king things will be different.

Gwen: I will watch you grow into the king that Camelot deserves.

Gwen: I should go, sire.
Arthur: There's no need to call me that.
Gwen: There is every need ... sire.

Gwen: Your place is here in Camelot.
Arthur: My place is with you.
Gwen: This isn't just about us.

Arthur: When I AM king things will be different. We can be together.
Gwen: I will count the days until then.

Arthur: No! Guinevere!

Arthur: I will always love you!

Arthur: I never loved another.
Gwen: One day you will ... I cannot be your queen.

Arthur: What happened while I was staying with you -- I'm afraid my father would never understand.

Gwen: Live for me, Arthur. That's all I ask right now.

Arthur: Something I should've said a long time ago. Something from the heart I dare not speak.

Arthur: I'm still a single man.
Gwen: Indeed.

Arthur: It's what you do when you love someone.

Gwen: We should be heading back to Camelot soon.
Arthur: We can stay a while longer.

Arthur: I can't watch her die, Merlin.

Gwen: When I'm gone will you take care of him for me?

Arthur: And Guinevere will take her place on the throne beside me.
