In this tutorial I give some tips for drawing foreshortened figures.
Show notes: Drawing tutorials. A way to make your drawings of the human figure "pop." Draw a box here. Three spheres in the box. If the box is tipped over and getting smaller in 3D space each sphere is smaller. Look how they overlap. Parts of the human figure eclipse each other the same way. The ones in front will cover up the ones behind. Think of planets obscuring the view of other planets. This idea will help with foreshortening a lot. The last time I drew a figure as seen from above, now I want to draw one as seen from ground level, looking up. The feet are going to be a lot larger. See how the feet are in front of the lower leg and partially blocking them from view. Also, everything is see-through while your drawing and you can look through objects to partially draw the objects behind, enough to get it right. Foreshortening is still really difficult. With a foot, you have a complicated form compressed into a small area so one line is supposed to express the complexity of form. You can look through the toes to draw the heal but take your time. How can someone who studies anatomy use it to draw? Knowing the names is helpful but draw all the parts of the body. If I could only give one peace of advice it would be: practice. You have an invisible teacher helping you the whole time and that teacher is Practice.

am thoroughly enjoying these tutorials. Am fairly adept @ drawing EXCEPT people. Am afraid still to draw in public. Can I draw from photos/magazines til I'm more comfortable?

@kathleentanguy Yes, and drawing from life is better than drawing from photos.

It's a mechanical pencil, not sure about the brand. I can't seem to find it as I look around my desk. The size is .5.Cheers.
