Monitoring Mega-Load Madness on Hwy 12

Big Oil Turns Idaho Scenic Byway into Industrial Trucking Corridor-
This video shows a Conoco-Phillips mega load as it travels highway 12 at night along the Wild and Scenic middle fork of the Clearwater River in north central Idaho. The Port of Lewiston, State of Idaho, Conoco-Phillips, and Imperial Oil/ExxonMobil Canada are working to convert Idaho's stretch of U.S. Highway 12 from a beautiful Scenic Byway and All-American Road to an industrial truck route for the transport of gargantuan loads of heavy equipment. The oversize loads block the entire highway as they travel past the rural communities of Orofino, Kamiah and Kooskia, plus other small towns along the route in Idaho, and then across Montana to Canada.

Concerned citizens have been monitoring the activities of these massive shipments and have documented the chaotic nature of the Idaho Transportation Department's traffic management practices and the risks to public safety, travel delays, and damage created by these shipments.

My advice:

1) Turn off the auto focus, it doesn't work in the dark.

2) Edit, edit, edit. This piece is too lengthy to be persuasive.

3) Make the troopers arrest you. Citizens have a right to drive wherever & whenever they want. It's not like you're chaining yourselves to the pilot car. Get arrested. Make the state prove its case.

These corporations have greased the palms of those we elect to represent us. They are buying our country. Sooner or later we will all be fighting Goliath.

The focus was partly an issue because of the snow on the windshield. I think we made our point by documenting their behavior. We weren't trying to cause trouble or get ourselves arrested.

The whole point was to experience the management of public traffic during a megaload shipment, so we followed their instructions, as much as that was possible given the confusion of the ITD crew.

We presented this during my testimony at the contested case hearing in Boise. The judge watched the first few minutes of the video, up to the point where the snowplow blocks our lane. That's all he was willing to view. I wish he had watched the whole thing.
