George Simon, M.D., Burtschy Family Distinguished Endowed Chair in Lung Cancer Research at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), discusses molecular analysis of non--small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) tumors and how it (1) could allow combination chemotherapeutic regimens to be tailored to improve efficacy and (2) identifies tumors with specific genetic mutations that are likely to respond to novel targeted therapies. Clinical trials of such targeted therapies are under way at MUSC.
