you gotta bend the pump rod to where it is almost straight and move it to the top hole in pump arm. This will get the bog out. Also, every Edelbrock carb i have worked on has incorrect float levels. Re-set them to specs. Buy some "orange" metering rod springs from ebay.. Pull top off carb, adjust float level, pull metering rods, remove factory springs and install orange springs. Move the front jets to the rear and the rear jets to the front. This will put a smile on your face!
I have the same problem with my edlebrock 75cfm and my 74 firebird with a 350. After you tune it and take it to wot it wont ilde and it acts like it is going to die when you give it a little gas. I have no idea what the problem could be, i just rebuilt the motor and put on a new destributor and everything. I thought it was a blown head gasket but it has perfect compressoin. It has to be the carborator, if you found out what the problem is could you please tell me.
My 2cents. First off I wouldn't go with a 600cfm carb of any kind for a 400cid pontiac you will need a 750 or higher. The Qjet is actually taller than the edelbrock carb, from what I have read the edelbrock RPM intake is higher than stock and the performer intake will clear for the shaker so its the intake that is giving you clearance problems. The 1975 and up Qjets will all flow 800cfm and the earlier ones will flow 750. I had some problems with the E-carb and just put on a Qjet.
engine cid x max rpm divided by 3456 will give you the correct carb cfm.also check for vaccum leaks.but if you are running a 600 cfm carb on a 400 cid plus engine and your max rpm is around 6500 you you may need to rebuild the the carb to mach cfm requirements.
I have the same carb (1406) on my 84 z28 with a silverado 350, crane cam, wiand intake. I had the same problem that you are/were experiencing. I solved my problem by moving the linkage to the accelerator pump to the bottom hole on the pump itself. Try that and see what happens. As apdbmp3 was saying about jets and float levels, check that also, it might be running too rich and flooding with fuel. Good luck!

I'm gonna say, vacuum leak at carb-intake gasket and rebuild with new jets. Set floats to spec and adjust air fuel ratio. Good luck man.
