Ferran Savall-El Noi de La Mare (The child of the virgin)
Traditional Catalan
Arrangements: Mario Mas & Ferran Savall
From the album "Mireu el nostre mar" (2008)
This is a typical and very popular Christmas carol which, according to the catalan folklorist Joan Amades, has its origins in a old Galaic dance which was traditionally sung and danced in a round in church on Christmas morning. The melody is almost exactly the same as that of the traditional Spanish infantry marching tune dating back to the wars in Flanders ( 16th-17th century) and is well-known throughout Europe, although whether as a result of the popularity of the marching song or because the tune was aleady popular, is uncertain.

Verse 1: What shall we give to the son of Mary? What shall we give to the tiny Boy? Raisins and figs and walnuts and olives, These are all things that the Child would enjoy.
Verse 2: Angels look down from the sky to adore him. Angels from high come to rock him to sleep. Raising their voices in songs full of glory, while the babe slumbers so safe in their keep.
