Chopin Concerto Recorded 1961. Rosina Lhevinne celebrated her 80th birthday in March,1960. To commemorate the occasion,Mme. Lhevinne was invited to perform the Mozart Piano Concerto No.21 K467 with the Juilliard Orchestra. The following year, she was invited by the National Orchestral Association to perform the 1st Piano Concerto of Chopin. Public performances by Madame Lhevinne were very rare and the elite of New York's musical life were present at this performance given in New York on February 28,1961. Harold C. Schonberg, the music critic of the New York Times wrote, "It was a flexible, mellow, unhurried Chopin she presented. Above all were concentration on tone and legato. The audience heard the kind of sound that might have been heard on a Pleyel in Chopin's own day."
My own personnel review? Immaculate pianism welded with great artistry. In other words, a legendary performance.

  • My violin teacher was principal second at the time of this recording. He told me all about Morel and Lhevinne and how Morel was a bad-tempered conductor until Lhevinne whispered some words into his ears. He completely changed after her whispering. No one knows what she said to him...

    Interesting!!

  • Lovely. I have always preferred Mme. Lhevinne's playing over her husband's. Although Josef may have been the greater pianist, I have always believed she was the greater artist.

Besides, I used to occasionally ride in the elevator with her.:)

  • Good tempo! Not so crazy fast like many play it. Makes me want to dance :)

  • What a beautiful, sensitive, honest, fluent performance! Sparkling, witty, filled with delicious details, rhythmically catchy....perfect! And she was over 80 when she performed this? WOW! Supple and agile, too!

  • She has absolutely perfect rhythm and tone quality. That is the magic she taught at Juilliard-the technique of weight which makes a beautiful tone coupled with flawless finger technique.

  • Perfection

  • OMG, it's by far the greatest version to my ear. This is supreme.

    Those are always the mysteries!!!!!!!

    I want to know too!!!

  • @Musicownz. One tolerates ignorance, especially in the young, but ignorance coupled with wilful arrogance requires correction. Yes, the concerto is in E minor, the last movement is in E major (so what?). The last movement is based on the Krakowiak - a fast Polish dance in duple time. You mention 1:20 - could you possibly tell us what bar number this corresponds to in the score and why it prevents the movement from being based on the Krakowiak?

  • @keybawd isn't this piece in e minor? so it's not supposed to be a dance? it's not a dance buddy. u can tell by around 1:20

  • She gets the dance rhythms to sparkle because she doesn't take it fast. She gives herself time and space to enjoy the nuances of the rhythm. These days, pianists go racing off and lose the wonderful flexibility of the dance. This is a great performance.
