The Gracie family has used this unique mat making process for generations. In this video, Rener breaks it down step-by-step so you can mat your own home, garage, or school for a fraction of what it would cost to purchase pre-made mats. Rener also reveals the new green official Gracie Garage Portable Grappling Mats that you can use to turn your home into a little branch of the Gracie Academy.

Here is the breakdown of permanent mat making process:

Layer 1: 1/2" Carpet Padding (tape it at the seams)
Layer 2: 1" Closed Cell Polyethylene Foam - 2lb EVA (tape this also)
Layer 3: Industrial Carpet (not mandatory, unless you want the luxury of being able to remove the vinyl tarp for parties from time to time).
Layer 4: 18oz. Vinyl Tarp http://www.PolyFabrics.com

The benefit of making your own mat is that it's cheaper than purchasing quality pre-made mats for the same square footage, and you'll feel really proud when you're done.

The benefit of purchasing the Official Gracie Garage Portable Grappling Mats is that you can store/move them with ease and they have the official Gracie Academy seal on them. Plus, Rener will make you some watermelon juice when he shows up for a surprise visit.

  • @nickbosin Judo is a part of BJJ so the answer would be a firm yes.

  • can someone send me a link to where i can find this Polyethylene Foam?

  • @josh1212121 Rickson has demonstrated this over the years many times but in all honesty it's more like "escaping" multiple attackers which is fine with me. I just want to survive. I also watched certified GJJ instructor John Crouch, demonstrate an ability to shrug off and walk away from two police officers that were trying to subdue him. This was in a L.E. training situation of course but impressive nonetheless.

  • you can beat multiple attackers with jiu jitsu? didn't know that. they should show how to do that

  • 1 Cuntbag got whooped by a Gracie Martial Artist.

  • 100% BOOM :)

  • yep your right bout the matts, some guy broke his pinky toe between the matt at my place lol

  • @nickbosin nah. as long as you're not running around with socks on it, you won't be slipping. bare feet or wrestling shoes have plenty of traction.

  • Is this mat system good for stand up arts as well? I can see how the firmness is good for the footing and the padding is good for landing but, is it to slick (slippery) for a stand up stlye?

  • Are these home made mats good to throw people on (judo)?
