This is also known as the natural minor scale. "A" Aeolian contains all the same notes as the "C" Major scale but has the sixth degree {The A Note} as the root. My guitar is a tad flat so I apologize for that.

  • Lots of people like to say "Modes are just the major scale on a different root", and it just messes with the beginning guitar player.

Think of modes of just as separate scales. Each mode offers a different FEEL to a piece of music:

Dorian: minor key - eerie, funky, latin-style

Aeolian: minor key - sad, somber, gritty

Mixolydian: major key - happy, funky, bluesy

Those are the three big ones. Pentatonic is key to all of them though, so learn that first if you haven't already!

    Hope this helped.

  • Your seriously my role model in the guitar world...I love your playing! Just ordered your dvd's...can't wait!

  • Marty. . . I have an idea. you know that loop that you played in the very beginning of the video? Record two hours straight of you soloing over that. . . broadcast it over the speakers. . . and then, when everyone is hypnotized and spacing out and listening to the beautiful music, you can take over the world. Seriously, I would let you.

  • very talent teacher,easy to understand,thanx Marty!

  • Go buy Jimmy Bruno's "No nonsense jazz". You'll understand and play all the modes in a week or even less. It's very easy, made for dummies like me :-)

  • jea... I liked it.... I only have a very small tip, (if I may)

I know you knwo this but try to see and explane the V7 (#9 etc) at 3:57 as a DOMINANT chord with the alterations, that I call HMV (Harmonic Minor Dominat)... What I'm trying to say is that I dont see it as a A Harmonic Minor over D7#9 but more as a D Dominat witht the HMinor alterations... I know it's the same but it helps me know where I'm in the song, and where I'm going with it... Keep posting... thanks
