Driving through emotions...

jj lehto was a hell of a driver in the r8 and he most rightly deserved his '05 win in it. i have a picture of him during a pit stop at portland in 2004 and he autographed it for me in 2005!

To be clear: opposite lock is actually when you have reached the limit of counter steer, when there is no more travel left in the wheel (or your forearms are crossed and together so no further travel is possible). At that point the use of the throttle to control the yaw is all you have left . Think "drifting".

JJ a lil pissed about being clearly faster : )
2Bad Flavio Mafiatore ruined his career >.<

I think hes mad

Unreal amount of dive under brakes! JJ, were your crutch belts a bit loose? :P

Jeez look at that guy being tossed around like that. but i'm sure it's not just him, it's everyone because that's racing :D
-
his driving style is about as economical as a rocket powered hummer
how does the gearshift on the r8 work? he seems to be like twisting something on the upshifts (unfortunatly you cant see his left hand for the downshifts) i presumed it would be a standard paddle shift, not unless its just jj being really enthusiastic with the shifts?

it is a regular paddle and it is just his style of doing it. many drivers do it similarly. racing drivers are superstitious and maybe doing it aggressively like that makes them feel faster :)

Could someone explain to me exactly what happens in the beginning? Was JJ just upset that he hit the dudes car, or was it some sort of out-of-line defensive manuever that he was pissed off about? Also, what exactly is meant by opposite lock? He really looks like he's struggling with the wheel on those first few turns...Is that from worn tires?

If it's battle for a position then I don't know, but if it's a car that is going to get lapped, then waving is definitely for "stupid defensive move".
Opposite lock is same as counter-steering, turning the wheel to the opposite direction, to correct oversteer etc.
Could be worn tyres, especially when R8 never had traction control - unlike all cars now, so boring :(
