USING MICROSOFT KINECT AND SECOND LIFE TO EMBODY AVATARS: GESTURE & EMOTION TRANSFERENCE

We are developing methods of recognizing social gestures in order to explore the transference of emotion and gesture between a virtual world and the real world. Thai Phan, an engineer at the MxR Lab, has developed new software, using the OpenNI toolkit as a foundation, which utilizes Kinect to read gestures and triggers corresponding server-side scripts within Second Life. These methods may allow the user to feel a deeper emotional connection to the social gesture performed by their virtual avatar, regardless of the bond which already exists between the user and his recipient. Instead of having to think about pressing the right sequence of keys to make a 'wave' gesture, the user can simply raise their hand and wave.

  • hey i just got this desk thing for SL and this is my first comment from in second life

  • We are the knights who say OpenNi!

  • nice work, I'd love to eventually see an option in SL to use a kinect to map facial expression and arm and hand movements to your avatar, it would add a TON of dimension to voice chatting

  • Looks tiring. x]

  • where can i get one

  • @quiettornado1970 maybe cause it's not the video to talk about how can you transform you avatar in anything you want from a little light to a giant transformer?

  • that's a false vid. can't use kinect to do that!! lol.

  • for linux ???

  • Any chance of developing the software for a Mac? Or, do you know if there is similar software available for a Mac. Thank you for creating this for users.

  • why no one talk about how many kind of avatars there are in secondlife?
