Why is my car smoking so much?
It smoked when I first bought it. It smoked after I put in a remanufactured engine (longblock) with all new seals and gasket sa month later (I spun a bearing). It smoked after I changed the pcv valve. It smoked after my mechanic tried some oil additive to make it stop, and it still smokes now after I changed to 20w50 dino oil yesterday (it smoked on 5w30 dino and 10w30 mobil 1 as well).

It starts smoking while idling after I start the engine and it warms up for a minute or two. Once it starts, it smokes harder when I give it gas, and then releases some BIG clouds of smoke when I let off the gas, but it stops smoking after I drive it for a few minutes. My mechanic says his best guess is that oil is getting by the valve guides. I do know that I burn about a quart of oil every 1000-1500 miles. Everything on the car is stock, and I doubt the turbos have ever been replaced, so they have 110k miles on them, and the engine has about 7k.

What do you think is causing the smoke and how can I fix it?

  • actually, the problem kind of went away by itself. Thanks for the ideas though, except for ormazd58, who sounds like a tool

  • beats me why people are watching and commenting on this video. I put it up months ago so i could link to it from the 3si forum. The problem pretty much went away after I put in a new y-pipe, although it still lets out a puff of smoke occasionally when I go up or down a hill while it's still warming up.

  • @ormazd58 Then why you watching a vid that says 3000gt at the top? School obviously can't help you :) go play with traffic ill be there in a bit with my vr4 hitting 0-60 in about 5.5 seconds or less to run you over kid

  • Looks like Valve Stem Seals or Seafoam(lol)

  • Yep! That would piss me off too.

  • its white so is oil burn if it was gas should be black.... my guess is tha the mixture gas,air is unbalanced or you have bad seals

  • actually no, back then 2 mnths ago i had removed the exhaust b4 the cat to make sure it wasnt the cat or shit left in the muffler, turns out after re-building it, it was #3 valve guides, one was warped slightly and cracked.

  • bad catalitic converter

  • i have about the same problem, i have an 87' toyo. pickup and its got a new 22R 4cyl 2BBl carb and all the cyls. have full compression, theres no vaccum leaks, and the fucking thing smokes like a train! does n e 1 know what could be the problem??

  • Number one, get that 20W50 OUT OF THERE! Way too thick to be running in that twin turbo 3.0. Second, check the turbos! Remember, oil runs through them, and it sounds like you have checked and/or replaced everything else, check the turbos and make sure oil is not leaking from the seals!

  • sorry this is irrelevant

    but that's my dream car

  • Well what you should do first is check the compression in each of the cylinders. Check the oil to see if it has a milky tint to it. If it has bad compression and or milky oil you should definitely have the head gasket checked. Also, id it has any slight knocks of any sort you may have a valve problem, bent valve or bad seals. Could be a couple of different problems. good luck
