Following itv gold 1's recent presentation of "The Servant" (1963), itv gold 2 now brings you the promised earlier work from acclaimed director, Joseph Losey, the ground-breaking "The Criminal", showing as our latest complete "Best of British" presentation. The movie stars Stanley Baker (as Johnny Bannion), Sam Wanamaker (as Mike Carter), Grégoire Aslan (as Frank Saffron) and Margit Saad (as Suzanne). Also featured are British actors, Jill Bennett (as Maggie) and Rupert Davies (as Edwards). Here's the synopsis: "An ex-con who's taken part in the robbery of a racetrack is caught and sent back to prison, but he won't tell his fellow gang members where he's stashed the loot. Great score by John Dankworth......as heard with the amazing voice of Cleo Laine in the opening/closing credits song. Thanks for the upload by the way of this fine gem of film 60's work.

A film full of great talent: Murray Melvin, Rupert Davies, Sam Wannmaker, Jill Bennett, Patrick Wymark, Stanley Baker, the young Kenneth Cope and that fantastic voice of Cleo Laine and the music of Johnnie Dankworth! And even written by Alun Owen! A rare treat, indeed. It reminded me of the film of Brendan Behan's play, "The Quare Fellow." I've watched this film a couple of times already. I just love it.

There's a Cliff Richard poster on the wall at 00:15 In a prison? Hmm, perhaps. That's a strange haircut Stan Baker's got. Is it a syrup?

"Just try to complete a sentence without ya saying the word like" That struck me funny given how over used that word is today.

"So this movie was made in Canada?"

Nice one ITV. Excellent production; Laurence Naismith made a fine philosophic Det. Inspector. Irish characters of one stripe or another did seem to be to the forefront both on the side of right and in the underworld. Set in Manchester perhaps..
